Downconvert - The process which reduces the number of pixels in the scanning format used to represent an image, so that it may be reproduced on a display of lower resolution, such as a conventional television. For example, an HDTV image may be downconverted to an SDTV or NTSC image, but in the conversion significant detail information may be lost.
Clie - Handheld manufactured by Sony. CLIE stands for Communication, Link, Information, & Entertainment.
Commercial Software - Software that must be purchased before use. There is no "testing" period available before the customer must spend money for the product.
Rendering - Applying shading and lighting effects to a two dimensional image to create the look of a three dimensional object.
Datacasting - Also known as "enhanced TV." Datacasting is the act of providing enhanced options offered with some digital programming to provide additional program material or non-program related resources. This allows viewers the ability to download data (video, audio, text, graphics, maps, services, etc.) to specially equipped computers, cache boxes, set-top boxes, or DTV receivers.
Analog TV - Analog technology has been in use for the past 50 years to transmit conventional TV signals to consumers. "Standard" television broadcasts in analog TV. Analog signals vary continuously, creating fluctuations in color and brightness.
DTV - "Digital television." This comprises all the components of digital television, including HDTV, SDTV, datacasting, and multicasting, falling under the standards established by the ATSC.
