THX - THX is an enhancement, engineered by Lucasfilm Ltd., of a Dolby® Pro Logic® scheme. A THX system must have identical main and centre speakers, special dipolar surround speakers, at least one subwoofer, a special amount of power and a special surround sound processor.
Terrestrial - A broadcast signal transmitted "over the air" to an antenna.
Quick Start - A refined start mechanism that results in less time spent waiting for the picture to appear on the screen.
8VSB modulation technique - (8-level vestigial sideband) - DTV stations in the U.S. use 8VSB modulation. This is an AM mode wherein the carrier is multiplied by an 8-level digital signal, and then a filter is used to remove all but the carrier and 6 MHz of the upper sideband. ("8VSB" is often used as a synonym for OTA.)
Automatic Advanced Video Enhancement - Standard video signals are converted to higher resolution by referencing 26 different points in space and time to create smooth edges and diagonals. Hitachi's VirtualHDT digital video processor considerably surpasses the industry standard by employing an algorithm that references 10 points in time, as well as 16 points horizontally in space.
HDTV - High Definition Television. A term characterizing the highest resolution and performance of digital television. Presently defined as either 720 progressive vertical lines of resolution x 1280 horizontal pixels or 1080 interlaced vertical lines by 1920 horizontal pixels. High Definition programming is now readily available via cable, satellite or over-the-air systems.
Multicasting - The option to multicast was made possible by digital technology to allow each digital broadcast station to split its bit stream into 2, 3, 4 or more individual channels of programming and/or data services. (For example, on channel 7, you could watch 7-1, 7-2, 7-3 or 7-4.)
