Palm OSr - The operating system used on PalmT handhelds and other third-party devices, including Sony, Handspring, Kyocera and more.
JPEG - An acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group, a JPEG is the most commonly used type of digital image format. By eliminating very subtle color distinctions that the human eye usually cannot detect, JPEG images are compressed so that they can save faster and use less space. Because JPEG format actually alters an image, it's compression is said to be "lossy," meaning that a certain amount of data is lost every time a JPEG is edited, saved, and compressed again.
File Format - The particular arrangement of digital information that is saved from an application program. The method of arrangement or storage is unique for any particular application program, but most applications can import and export standardized graphic and text file formats, such as TIFF, GIF, and EPS graphics; or RTF or ASCII text.
Cable card - The Cable Card is the mechanism the industry has adopted to prevent the piracy of cable services. The cable company will periodically mail out new cable cards, ask their customers to plug them into the TV, and then disable the old cards, so anyone without a new cable card would lose service.
Interlaced Scanning - Some HD televisions and most conventional televisions use the "interlace" method of scanning, in which the picture is transmitted and painted on the screen in two passes. In the first pass, every other line is painted and in the second, the lines in between. Some display types, such as LCD, plasma and DLP cannot display directly images transmitted as interlaced signals and must convert them to a progressive format prior to their display.
IEEE 1394 - Also called Firewire or iLink. Originally a serial bus for PCs, 1394 may or may not become the interconnection standard for DTV products. It is competing with DVI. IEEE 1394 is a spec for a hardware interconnect plus a software shell. But additional software, such as HAVi, is required for connected units to actually talk to each other. Some day 1394 may dramatically simplify the way DTV products interconnect.
Letterbox - The full display of a wide aspect ratio 16 - 9 picture on a display of aspect ratio 4 - 3 will result in black bars above and below the picture. This arrangement is referred to as "Letterbox" and is often seen during movies shown on television.
