Decibel (dB), loudness - A numeric expression of the relative loudness of a sound. The minimum change in sound intensity that a human ear can distinguish is approximately 3 dB.
Aperture - The opening within a camera lens system that controls the brightness of the image striking the film. The size of the opening is indicated by the f/number.
Pentaprism - The prism that sits on the top of most SLRs. The pentaprism transmits the light reflected upward by the camera's mirror into the camera's eyepiece.
Multi-path interference - Some neighborhoods are plagued with this problem: - The signal finds more than one path to the antenna. Multi-path results from reflections off of buildings and diffraction around the sides of hills. For NTSC sets this will result in ghosts: multiple images shifted laterally. For DTVs the result can be an unusable signal, even though it may be strong. The solutions are moving the antenna or selecting a very directional antenna. Newer generations of DTV receivers are better able to cope with multi-path.
Dolby Digital (Dolby AC-3) - The 5.1 channel audio standard for DTV and HDTV in Canada and the USA. It includes six discreet audio channels - Left, Center, Right, Left Surround (or side), Right Surround (or side), and a subwoofer -- LFE, "low frequency effects" -- (considered the ".1" as it is limited in bandwidth). Many televisions process these six channels into a two channel stereo pair and do not provide the full 5.1 channel surround sound.
Terrestrial - A broadcast signal transmitted "over the air" to an antenna.
Super Contrast CRT - Hitachi projection television CRT that is specifically engineered for high-quality HDTV performance. It employs an improved electron gun and high-definition phosphor formulation which produces a bright and highly focused image.
