HDTV - High Definition Television - HDTV is a TV system having approximately twice the vertical and horizontal picture resolution of today's NTSC TV and having a wide aspect ratio of 16 - 9. Two HDTV formats are currently in use; (a) 1920 pixels per line and 1080i lines per frame and (b) 1280 pixels per line and 720p lines per frame. HDTV can be recognised by its spectacular picture resolution, freedom from annoying artefacts and impressive 5.1 channel surround sound.
High-Pass Crossover - A filter, often found in a powered subwoofer, that accepts the full-range audio signal heading for the main speakers. This filter only passes frequencies falling above a predetermined frequency and it attenuates those below. The goal is to prevent the main speakers from reproducing sounds that would be more accurately reproduced by a subwoofer.
Filters - Software that is used to modify digital images by altering the values or arrangement of selected image pixels.
Moir‚ Pattern - A visual defect that occurs in half-tone printing when the dots of the different separations used to create the half-tone image are at the wrong angles (See Screen Angles).
Aspect Ratio - The relationship of an image's horizontal length and vertical height. The horizontal length number is placed first (i.e. 3 - 2).
Digital Cable - A service provided by many cable providers, digital cable offers viewers more channels. Contrary to many consumers' beliefs, digital cable is not the same as High-Definition Television or digital television; rather digital cable simply offers cable subscribers the options of paying for more services. Digital Monitor - DTV monitors are televisions that can display a digital signal but lack an integrated tuner (unlike an integrated digital set), and thus cannot receive a digital broadcast signal without an additional set-top box.
Preprogrammed Remote Control - A remote that is pre-programmed to operate different-brand components - from VCRs to set-top boxes, stereo receivers to DVD players, even satellite systems.
