Compression - A method of reducing the number of bits required to store or transmit programs by the removal of redundant and/or non-critical information in the digital picture and sound. The DTV broadcasting standard for Canada, uses the MPEG-2 video and the AC-3 audio compression coding. Compression allows the delivery of more programs in a single channel.
Analog Video - The conventional NTSC television system in use today uses analog technology, in which the image sound and the picture brightness and color are represented by signals proportional to these values. The values of these signals are vulnerable to interference and noise. Digital television overcomes this vulnerability and delivers signals that are totally clean.
Subtractive Primaries - These are the three colors that are used to create all other colors in color photographic printing. (Cyan, Magenta and Yellow)
VirtualHDT Video Processing Circuitry - Proprietary Hitachi circuitry that digitally upconverts conventional sources to 1,080 progressive lines (twice the display speed of HDTV). This additional picture information enables the processor to make extremely accurate determinations when optimizing the signal to the high-definition capability of the display. Whether it is a DVD, basic cable or satellite channel, or a VCR, VirtualHD 1080p presents the best possible picture regardless of the signal source.
VGA - This acronym is short for the "Video Graphics Array" display mode. VGA resolution is 640 x 480 pixels.
Amplifier - A component used to amplify voltage or current. In audio systems, an amplifier is a circuit or component used for strengthening an audio signal.
IX [Information Exchange] - This is the designation for how the camera, film and photofinishing equipment communicate with each other. There are two types of Information Exchange. Optical Information Exchange simply exposes marks on the film in a reserved area. This is used to tell the photofinisher what format of picture you selected (C, H, or P) when the photo was taken. Magnetic Information Exchange has even more information. It can tell the photofinisher about the conditions that the picture was taken so that it can be printed to its best. It can also record greetings and information (date, time, name of event, etc.) which can be printed on the back (see Backprinting).
