Amplifier - A component used to amplify voltage or current. In audio systems, an amplifier is a circuit or component used for strengthening an audio signal.
Aspect Ratio - the ratio of image width to image height. The term may apply to the display device configuration, or the shape of the content being displayed. (See Letterboxing) HDTV uses an aspect ratio of 16 units wide by 9 units high. Conventional television programming and displays are at an aspect ratio of 4 - 3. Digital SDTV programs may aspect ratios from 4 - 3 to 16 - 9, dependant on content and its source (e.g. upconverted NTSC is likely to be 4 - 3).
SRSr Surround Sound - A dynamic audio playback system that simulates a three-dimensional sound field using only two speakers. This process works whether the signal is mono, stereo, or surround-encoded.
Premium SMS - Premium Short Message Service: Customers can use Premium SMS to purchase digital media for their mobile phones. With Premium SMS, a purchase request is sent to the vendor via an SMS text message. The purchase is completed when the vendor sends the purchase to the customer also through an SMS text message.
Progressive scan - This is the opposite of interlaced scan.
Point - A unit of measurement used in the graphic arts industry. There are 12 points to a Pica. One point equals approximately 1/72 inch. See "Postscript Point."
Direct-view TV - Set The formal name for a standard, one-piece TV with a picture tube.
