Multi-Language Subtitles - DVD discs can contain up to 32 different languages for subtitles. Subtitle display can be switched on or off, and you can select the language of your choice from those recorded, by using the remote control.
35mm equivalency - What a digital lens would be equivalent to in terms of a 35mm film SLR camera. Used as a standard for discussing the field of view and magnification power of a lens. In 35mm equivalency, lenses over 50mm are telephoto, whereas lenses below 50mm are wide-angle or fisheye lens. In a digital SLR, a mirror placed in front of the focal plane (where the image sensor sits) bounces the light that comes from the lens upward into a prism and then out the eyepiece. When you press the shutter button, the mirror flips up out of the way so the light can pass to the focal plane.
Component video. This 3-wire convention was created for connecting DVD players to TVs or monitors. It avoids downgrading the signal to NTSC. The signals may be RGB or YPrPb. Some HD STBs have only component video output.
Direct Preset Access - Permits direct access to a preset AM or FM radio station by using the receiver's remote control.
Cradle - The device in which a handheld or Palm OSr handheld is placed to synchronize data with a desktop computer. The cradle connects to the desktop via a serial cable.
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) - A graphics file format designed for use with photographs and other color bitmaps. The JPEG format uses compression algorithms and an "averaging" technique to create files that are smaller than would be the case with other graphics file formats. Saving an image as a JPEG files does cause a very minor loss of image data and in some cases, quality.
Composite Video - An analog video signal (NTSC, PAL or SECAM) that includes both luminance (brightness) and chrominance (color) signals encoded together to form a single signal.
