Automatic Phosphor Aging Compensation (APAC™) - APAC functions only when black bars are present, either during letterboxed material or when viewing a 4:3 image on a 16:9 television. When these bars are present, APAC imperceptibly moves the image up and down, or to the right and left, one pixel at a time. APAC acts as a screen saver for the television. Plasma monitors are more prone to image burn in, meaning that after continuously watching material where black bars are present, these lines could be permanently burnt into the phosphors. APAC can significantly reduce the change of burn-in.
DAT (Digital Audio Tape) - A digital audio recording format that combines the 16-bit audio quality of CDs with the recording capability of a small tape.
Set-top box (STB) - A box, similar to the familiar cable box, that is capable of receiving, decoding and sending to the associated television the picture and sound of the selected DTV broadcast. The use of an STB would allow the use of conventional televisions to receive DTB programs, but at reduced levels of resolution and with imperfections due to aspect ratio differences, leading to letterboxing or cropping of the sides of the picture.
Resolution - The measure of picture information increments. Measured horizontally as pixels, and vertically as lines.
Channel - A 6 MHz (bandwidth) section of spectrum for over-the-air broadcast (channels 2 - 69) or in TV cable that carries one analog NTSC program or one or more DTV programs.
Digital Answering System - In a fully digital answering system, both incoming and outgoing messages are recorded on integrated circuitry (a memory chip). This feature allows certain messages to be erased while preserving others, regardless of their recorded time.
