ATSC - "Advanced Television Systems Committee." Formed to establish technical standards for U.S. advanced television systems. ATSC is now used as the catch-all nomenclature for DTV broadcast standards.
PIM - personal information management. Refers to handheld computer applications that organize personal information such as calendar, to do lists, memos.
Progressive scan - This is the opposite of interlaced scan.
802.11b - A wireless standard for device connectivity. Mainly for LAN connections and not necessarily wireless Internet . This standard allows handhelds, desktops and other wireless devices to exchange information at up to 11 mbs at several hundred feet.
Lines of Resolution - Usually refers to the horizontal resolution capability of the TV, which is an indication of the maximum number of equally spaced black and white vertical line pairs that can be resolved on a TV test pattern. Lines of resolution should not be confused with scan lines.
Symbian / Symbian Ltd. - A joint venture between Psion, Motorola, Ericsson and Nokia to develop and support the EPOC operating system. Formerly known as Psion Software. Symbian also refers to the operating system used by Nokia and Sony Ericsson in their mobile phones.
Premium SMS - Premium Short Message Service: Customers can use Premium SMS to purchase digital media for their mobile phones. With Premium SMS, a purchase request is sent to the vendor via an SMS text message. The purchase is completed when the vendor sends the purchase to the customer also through an SMS text message.
