Digitize - The process of sampling analog data and converting (quantizing) the signal into a digital data format usable by a computer.
Blank Search Blank - Search fast forwards or rewinds to find the beginning of an unrecorded spot on the tape.
IEEE 1394 - Also called Firewire or iLink. Originally a serial bus for PCs, 1394 may or may not become the interconnection standard for DTV products. It is competing with DVI. IEEE 1394 is a spec for a hardware interconnect plus a software shell. But additional software, such as HAVi, is required for connected units to actually talk to each other. Some day 1394 may dramatically simplify the way DTV products interconnect.
Rasterization - Changing vector type image information to raster image information.
Dolby Digital - This is a digital surround sound technology used in movie theaters and upscale home theater systems that enhances audio. Home theater components with this technology work in conjunction with a "5.1-speaker" system (five speakers plus a low-frequency subwoofer) to produce true-to-life audio that draws the listener into the onscreen action.
MPEG-2 - Compression standards for moving images and for audio as set by Motion Pictures Expert Group (MPEG). MPEG-2 video coding is the basis for ATSC digital television transmission in the U.S and Canada.
LCD Projection Television - New projection television display technology that enables a significant reduction in cabinet size-one third slimmer and less than half the weight of a comparably-sized CRT-based projection model. A high output light source, sophisticated lenses, dichroic mirrors, polarizing filters and advanced prism systems separate white light into the video colors of red, green and blue. Tiny liquid crystal light `valves' then control how those colors are re-combined to create the full-color video picture.
