SMPTE - "Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers." A professional organization that is responsible for the standards for film and television production.
Convergence - An adjustment that must be made occasionally to CRT sets. This adjustment makes the three colors coincide perfectly.
Primary Color - A color that is the basis for all other color combinations. The primary colors are Red, Green and Blue (RGB) in light; Cyan, Magenta and Yellow (CMY) in color photographic printing. In offset color printing, black (K) is added to CMY inks to more accurately reproduce an image.
Letterboxed - Refers to a program that is presented in or close to its original aspect ratio. The aspect ratio compares the width of the picture to the height. Standard TV broadcasts and cablecasts use a 4:3 aspect ratio, while most movies are shot in an approximately 16:9 ratio.
Red Eye Reduction - Some cameras with red eye reduction have a small bright red light, located on the front of the camera, that turns on when the shutter button is first depressed. The eye's iris will close in response to this light, making the opening in the eye smaller. The regular cameraflash then fires with less chance of being reflected back from the rear of the eye.
Driver - A sound-producing device. It is also another word for loudspeaker. The woofer, midrange and tweeter are the "drivers" in a speaker enclosure.
CMY (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) - These three subtractive primary colors are used in color-negative printing and in some color output devices to produce a full gamut of color. The combination of pure CMY inks produces black, and the elimination of all three produces white.
